Heater Sizing

How much heat do I need? This is a common question and you will find an easy guideline below, and this assumes the following but not limited to:
  • A desired temperature of 68-70F/20-22C
  • A hard ceiling (i.e. wood or drywall), not to exceed 10' above the floor
  • Insulated to or above the current code see Insulation on this page for a reference
  • Conditioned (heated) rooms around the desired room to heat

  • Supplemental heating: 3 – 5+ watts/sq.ft. of floor space
  • Primary: 6 – 8+ watts/sq.ft. of floor space
  • Yoga Studio: 15 – 30 watts/sq.ft. of floor space
  • For a quicker warm up time...
    • Maximize insulation in all areas, especially the ceiling as warm air rises
    • Stop and prevent any air leaks
    • Insulate over any heat sinks i.e. an exposed slab on grade floor will pull or wick energy out of the room quickly
    • Oversize to at the least the next heater size if you desire to use the heaters as more of a "on demand" solution
High Density units (93.75 Wsf & 83.33 W/sf of panel) - 2x4 750W & 2x6 1000W are intended for use in 9 ft and higher installations, such as on vaulted ceilings. The 2x4 750W is slightly more intense even than the 2x6 1000W and is primarily in the catalog for Hot Yoga studio purposes.
Low Density units (50 W/sf of panel) - 2x2 200W, 2x3 300W, 2x4 400W, 2x6 600W are intended for use in sub-8 ceiling height situations, like basement ceilings measuring 7'6" (or lower!)
Nominal Density units (62.75 W/sf of panel) - 2x2 250W, 2x3 375W, 2x4 500W, 2x6 750W are intended for use in the 8-9 ceiling range

We've installed a total of 8 panels in various areas of a mostly open warehouse. Installation is simple, operation is simple, and the warmth is simply nice. I'd consider using these panels at home if I had the need, and especially if I had solar!

Easy to install, easy to operate, and easy on the eye. We have a total of 8 of the 1000w panels installed and they work beautifully. We have ours in a warehouse which is otherwise cold. Standing under them feels nice and it warms up the room over time also.

  3. So far, so good. I put one on the ceiling in the bathroom that had no heat. Works well with the thermostat. Weather is cooling off, but not cold yet; so I am not sure I got the right size-calculation was between two sizes. If I need more heat I would not hesitate to buy the next size up. This type of heat is much cozier than forced air drafts.

  4. We started with a single panel and have added a new panel about once year for the past few years. The three panels installed currently are on the ground floor of our three-story house. Because the lower two floors share the same HVAC it was impossible to keep the ground floor warm in the colder months. Each room now has its own dedicated heat panel so the temperature can be controlled on demand. It’s awesome to sleep under one of these panels so we just purchased our fourth panel to be installed in our master bedroom on the third floor. We love this product!

  5. Awesome heater. We only use it for an hour or two whenever the kitchen gets too cold. When it first comes on it makes a few small popping sounds as it warms up – so you can tell it’s working. After that it is completely silent. It’s a gentle heat, a little warmer on the head than on the feet, but I suspect that if we left it on full-time the floor would also warm up and we wouldn’t notice the temperature differential. It’s nice that it doesn’t take up any floor or wall space. It’s very unobtrusive on the ceiling – most people don’t even notice it.
